Meeting to mark the nationalisation of B&B

The Bradford & Bingley Action Group (BBAG), which is fighting for compensation for small shareholders who lost out when the bank was nationalised in 2008, is to hold a public meeting next month to mark the sixth anniversary of former prime minister Gordon Brown’s decision to nationalise the bank.

A number of well-known MPs will be speaking at the meeting, which will take place on Saturday, September 27 at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford.

The main speakers include Philip Davies, the Conservative MP for Shipley; George Galloway, leader of the Respect party and MP for Bradford West; David Ward, the Liberal Democrat MP for Bradford East and Gerry Sutcliffe, the MP for Bradford South.

Six years ago the then Labour Government nationalised Bradford & Bingley and sold the savings book together with the retail branch network to Santander.

David Blundell, BBAG chairman, said: “The main purpose of the meeting is to present the positive aspects of the future campaign and discuss the past failings of Her Majesty’s Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Cabinet Office and the Bank of England,” said Mr Blundell.

“Informed opinion in the accounting profession is convinced that there will be a substantial surplus when B&B is finally wound down. This should be returned to the shareholders and not the Treasury.”
