Monster Pet aims for a French connection

FAST-GROWING family business Monster Pet Supplies has set its sights on the lucrative French market.

The Leeds-based company, which has seen its turnover grow to £3m in three years, sells pet supplies online to the general public.

Monster Pet Supplies, which has 14 staff, has now secured new financial support from Barclays, the firm’s bank since its inception, which will help it execute its plans to sell into France.

Jonny Gould, owner of Monster Pet Supplies, said: “We have recently launched a French language version of our website to attract the huge French pet supplies market of 11 million cats and 7.5 million dogs (compared to eight million cats and eight million dogs in the UK).”

Mr Gould added: “The French pet supplies market grew 25 per cent online in 2012.

“Our pricing and shipping charges mean that we can compete effectively for business even at distance.”

Monster Pet Supplies claims it can supply specialist dog food cheaper to the French than they can purchase it from a local trader.

The French market is home to around 63 million pets in total, with 49 per cent of French households owning a pet.

Mr Gould said: “We’ve doubled our turnover in the last 12 months, have a fantastic e-commerce conversion rate and more than 50 per cent of our customers come back and buy from us again.

“The time seemed right to expand overseas.”
