Mums are the word for self-defence

TWO Yorkshire mums and ju-jitsu fighters have used their knowledge of self-defence to set up a women’s personal safety business.

Safe Girls was set up by Debbie Potter and Cathy Henworth after several requests from friends and family to teach their teenage daughters self-defence techniques before they went to university or travelling on a gap year or when they went out socialising.

The East Yorkshire mums have just gained their 1st and 2nd dan black belts and are keen to point out that Safe Girls workshops cover more than just physical self-defence techniques.

Ms Potter said: “We always tell our students that the best form of self-defence is to avoid getting in a difficult situation at all, which is why we also spend time teaching ladies how to avoid become a victim in the first place.

“But should the worst ever happen, we teach them how to deal with panic as well as a number of highly effective but easy-to-learn techniques which will, hopefully, keep them out of danger.

“We have had grandmothers, mums and daughters enquiring about our workshops.”
