Undoubtedly the upper floor of a certain property on Swinegate in Leeds! It was my first restaurant and the birth of our group.

Are wise investors born or made?

They’re certainly made. I have learnt so much on the way, through good and bad decisions, and you get wiser with every deal.

Do you believe it’s become harder for entrepreneurs to make prudent investments since the crash of 2008?

No, I definitely think entrepreneurs see good opportunities whatever the conditions.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who are looking to make a major investment?

Do your due-diligence, be rigorous, listen to people and follow your instinct.

What’s the worst investment you’ve ever made?

I went ahead with a new site for a restaurant that didn’t deliver for us – but it turned out good in the end!

What lessons did you learn from your worst investment?

There is no substitute for getting the basics right and we changed our processes to make sure we would never make the same wrong decision again.

Which sectors are most likely to offer handsome returns for business investors?

I’d say the leisure, travel, health and well-being sectors – I see a growing appetite for lifestyle products and services.

Are there any sectors you feel should be avoided?

I think there can be opportunities in any sector but some are tough – especially manufacturing.

What was the best piece of investment advice you’ve received?

Avoid becoming too attached emotionally until it’s actually over the line.
