My investments: Richard Colvill, creative director at integrated marketing agency, Turn Key

Aside from property, my classic Porsches. They just won’t stop going up in value. I actually wish I’d kept my last one a couple of months longer, as it would have tripled in value. I have decided that my latest Porsche will stay in the collection and become my son’s one day, so that he can sell it.

Are wise investors born or made?

I know some guys that are natural money makers in business. But is that wise? It seems to pay off for them. My passion for Porsche informed my investment decisions; I figured that it’s wiser, and more fun, to be driving and enjoying my cash, rather than it being stuck in a bank.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who are looking to make a major investment?

You have to put your money into something you are passionate about. If you are happy at work, it will show and pay off. Working at Turn Key feeds my passion for creative and design, as does my investment outside of work!

What’s the worst investment you’ve ever made?

Probably the iphone 6 – it’s like a bar of soap, I’ve smashed three now.

What lessons did you learn from your worst investment?

There are many lessons that come with investing in classic cars. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Take care to invest your funds wisely and do plenty of research first.

Are there any sectors you feel should be avoided?

Don’t buy classic Porsches – I won’t be able to afford any more if they keep going up in price! I’d avoid anything that seems too good to be true, as it usually is.

What was the best piece of investment advice you’ve received?

“Always put your money into bricks and mortar.”
