My Passion with Carly Aplin: Why I am proud to be a dedicated follower of fashion

Carly Aplin, the assistant manager of Leeds colour salon Cutting Room Creative, talks about her love of fashion.

Behind my love of hairdressing, there is another world. A world crammed full with a passion for fashion. Like most twentysomething girls, I am a dedicated follower of fashion, but on an extreme level.

Throughout my day job I make other people look and feel amazing.

I find it fascinating how the right hair cut and colour can make such a difference to how someone feels.

Fashion has the same effect on me. I subscribe to the true fashion magazines; Vogue (British and Italian) Harpers Bazaar and Elle, as well as follow bloggers such as Tavi Gevinson and Susie Lau.

I have a special research book where I note down all the fashion trends, news and must-have products.

Some say I'm obsessive, but I see it as being thorough. I love to follow the career paths of designers from fashion house to fashion house. For example, how Marc Jacobs designs for Louis Vuitton as well as himself, and how Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel as well as having his own lines.

I am fascinated by the legacy of fashion and how it often comes back around.

I source the internet to collect vintage magazines so that I can predict what will be happening next in fashion, or how I can add my own style to a current trend. I have been known to spend upwards of 35 on vintage or limited edition issues.

As you might imagine, my house is like a fashion montage. Crammed full of clothes, magazines, shoes and accessories, I throw nothing away. You never know when it will be fashionable again

Every day is like Saturday night for me. I don't believe in "keeping it for a special occasion" but to make the most of fashion each and every day. I buy clothes to wear them, not to keep them locked up.

It might seem strange but I feel clothes have a purpose and personality.

I like to work with them rather than shelter them away from the outside.

They are an extension of my personality and I respect fashion for being able to reflect on this.

Like hair, fashion is a medium that when it works you feel amazing.

But if the shape or colour isn't fresh then it can leave you feeling dull.

My obsession for fashion is one that can be traced throughout my family, although I have taken it further than the rest.

You never know, perhaps I was Coco Chanel in a previous life.
