New college ready for start of academic year

DEVELOPER JF Finnegan has completed one of South Yorkshire's most challenging construction projects, Sheffield City College, handing over the new complex in time for the new academic year.

Work began in August 2007 to construct the purpose-built college which has three roof wind turbines along with a number of other sustainable features.

The first phase of construction incorporated a nursery and was followed by the development of a three-storey catering block in phase two.

As each phase was completed, students vacated the existing buildings and moved into the new facilities to allow the demolition of the old buildings.

Phase three saw the construction of the flagship atrium building and seven-storey tower which contain some 50 teaching rooms.

The final phase of a new sports hall, outdoor sports pitches, landscaping, and the new college entrance has now been completed.

Construction manager Tom Charles said: "Construction of a project of this scale and specification, incorporating the spectrum of sustainable features is a major undertaking.

"Our continued liaison with Sheffield City College throughout the three-year project has ensured its smooth delivery and subsequent handover in time for the September enrolments."
