New retailers poised to sign up to £260m development as cladding well underway

DEVELOPER Westfield is close to announcing leases with a number of new retailers at its £260m Yorkshire shopping centre as work continues apace, it said yesterday.

Cladding on The Broadway shopping centre in Bradford is well underway and the steelwork and concrete work is almost finished.

The 570,000 sq ft development, which is due to open in Autumn 2015, will be anchored by Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and Next. It has a capacity for more than 70 fashion, food and lifestyle brands and is currently 50 per cent let.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Duncan Bower, Westfield’s development director, said negotiations were underway with potential new retailers. “We are making good progress and the level of interest is increasing all the time,” he said.

“Some retailers have exchanged and others are about to exchange. The centre has been 50 per cent let by area for quite a while but now it is over 50 per cent let by rental income, which is indicative of the good progress we are making.”

Other brands which have signed up to the scheme include New Look, JD Sports, Boots and River Island.

There are currently around 350 workers on site. Mr Bower said: “We are starting to get a real feel for what it’s going to look like when it’s finished.”
