New venture sounds out the market in medical training

Fusion IP, which turns university research into business, said one of its subsidiaries has raised £325,000 to begin sales of its ultrasound ScanTrainer simulator.

MedaPhor, a Cardiff University spin-out, has developed innovative obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound training equipment which makes training medical staff cheaper. It also hopes to sign up overseas distributors.

Sheffield-based Fusion invested 140,000, with Finance Wales investing 100,000 and Cardiff Council putting in another 50,000. Private funding made up the balance.

ScanTrainer trains future ultrasound experts without the need for direct supervision. The 25,000 device "bridges the gap between conventional training and the patient", combining the latest generation animation with 'real feel' simulation techniques to train students to use ultrasound.

Fusion has exclusive access to research generated by Cardiff and Sheffield universities and owns 36.7 per cent of Medaphor.

"This is a significant moment for MedaPhor," said Stuart Gall, chief executive of MedaPhor. "The funding will enable us to commence sales in the UK and, importantly, start the process of signing up distributors in North America and Europe."

Paul Lee, strategic investments manager at Finance Wales, said: "Finance Wales is pleased to continue its support of MedaPhor and participate in the latest investment round.

"MedaPhor has developed a unique product and the investment will support it during this key commercialisation phase."
