‘No alternative’ for cost-hit drivers

NEARLY three-quarters of people in Yorkshire use a car or motorbike to get to work – despite the price of fuel almost doubling in the past decade.

Rotherham has the highest number of people going to work by car in the region at 79.9 per cent, closely followed by Barnsley and the East Riding, according to a GMB survey.

The union, which is holding its annual congress in Plymouth, is calling for more investment in public transport.

It found just under 12 per cent of people in Yorkshire used a bus, train or tram, lower than the national average of 17.3 per cent.

Tim Roache, GMB Regional Secretary for Yorkshire Region, said low numbers using public transport outside cities showed the “sheer lack” of an alternative, adding: “These figures demonstrate why the massive hike in the price of fuel has hit this region very hard.

“For the region as a whole there is an on-going need for investment in an integrated transport policy for all modes of travel.”
