No move made on the painful decisions

A YORKSHIRE entrepreneur believes the Budget failed to address the painful decisions that will have to be made to revive the UK's economy.

Iain Booth of Thirsk-based VetUK gave a mixed reaction to the Budget, although he welcomed measures to help small businesses.

His company is one of the largest internet retailers of veterinary products to pet owners, with more than 200,000 customers.

Mr Booth added: "As Spring budgets go, this one is a bit of a non-event and clearly written with the election in mind.

"It is good to see that banks are going to be providing more liquidity to help businesses develop and flourish and the 25bn growth package is certainly welcome.

"In theory, this should help to attract investors into businesses like ours which have a clearly defined market niche and a solid platform for further development.

"The cut in business rates from October is also encouraging. In real terms however, the budget seems to contain little or no detail on the pain that we are going to have to suffer and the cuts that are going to have to happen to cure the ills of the economy.

"There's nothing in here that will particularly impact on our customers' purchasing habits."
