What is the biggest development you have seen in the legal world during your career?

Conditional Fee Agreements. After the Event (ATE) Insurance and the recoverability of ATE premiums.

No win, no fee agreements are thought to apply only in personal injury cases, but in fact, the ability of both claimants and defendants to agree a no win, no fee agreement with their solicitors has transformed the risk landscape. 

What law would you like to see changed?

The Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 TUPE and in particular the service provision changes.

To help businesses the law should be as clear and certain as possible.

Recent case law is going some way on this but it is still the biggest ‘bug bear’ for many businesses.

My healthcare client portfolio are all looking at expanding opportunities in their respective sectors and the need to consider current and future TUPE issues often provides, if nothing else, an additional risk management issue to factor in.

What is the most exciting work you have ever done?

I was involved in one commercial dispute involving numerous subsets of claims within the same action.

The legal side of things was high value and interesting but the procedural issues, case managing a large multi-party action with numerous claims and cross-claims was also administratively challenging.

Who in the legal world do you most admire?

At the top of my list is Shami Chakrabarti. I think she is feisty and articulate.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the profession?

There are great opportunities for all types of lawyer. Find out where you could put your legal training to good use.
