North American group snaps up Mobile Tornado’s Push to Talk

Mobile Tornado, the company that can turn mobile phones into walkie-talkies, said that its Push to Talk (PTT) service has been taken up by a leading North American telecommunications company, TELUS.

Harrogate-based Mobile Tornado said TELUS Link provides instant “walkie-talkie” voice communication with an individual or a team as well as standard wireless service, enabling members of a work team to connect in less than one second wherever they are.

Customers can also roam in the US and around the world with enhanced coverage over Wi-Fi.

The group said that TELUS Link will allow Canadian businesses in fields such as construction, transport, energy, utilities and manufacturing to connect quickly on the TELUS 4G network, which now covers 97 per cent of Canada’s population.

Analyst Julian Yates at Investec said the deal could be worth £3.75m a year.

“We believe this deal should act as a very significant reference win, being a validation of the group’s technology that could encourage other operators to follow suit in due course,” he said.

Mobile Tornado worked closely with TELUS to optimise the solution over 4G networks and Wi-Fi.

Jeremy Fenn, chief executive of Mobile Tornado, said: “I am delighted that our instant communication platform installed for TELUS in Canada has launched to customers.

“This deal will be an important driver for our recurring subscription revenues. Increasing numbers of mobile network operators are looking to launch instant communication services to their enterprise customers. We are well placed to capitalise on this momentum.”
