Have your say

David Cross is the managing director of Sheffield architectural design company Coda Studios. He lives with his family in the city.

What was your first job?

As a boy I had a paper round and a part-time job at a butcher’s. I also had a job at a workingmen’s club and cleaned my dad’s truck – all at the same time. My first proper job was as an architect.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?

I think I would be a hairdresser/stylist. Even when times are hard people need to get their hair cut.

What was your worst mistake?

Quite a few involving ex-girlfriends.

What’s you ideal day away from the office?

Spending time with my wife and kids somewhere in the Peak District and usually involving some kind of eating and drinking.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why

Probably Michel Houellebecq, the French author, filmmaker and poet. I love his books. I would prefer a table of many guests though!

What was your best subject at school?

Design and technology.

What are your hobbies?

Running, cycling, triathlon, squash/racketball, reading, cooking and travel.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Nothing any different at all. I don’t do it and wouldn’t want it. You have to earn money to appreciate it!

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A brown woollen cardigan.

What’s your favourite time of day?

What’s the best thing about Yorkshire?

I love Yorkshire and am proud to be a Yorkshireman. I love the diversity of the countryside and coasts and the diversity of the cities. I love the integrity of the people, too.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

He tried his best.
