‘Open empty buildings to start-ups’

BUDDING entrepreneurs should be allowed to establish companies in empty council buildings in order to create jobs in Yorkshire, according to a newly-launched business pressure group.

The Yorkshire Enterprise Club is writing to local councils across the county, urging them to open up disused council buildings so that business people can move in. It follows the recent announcement that 20 Government buildings are to be made available for start-up businesses.

Gordon Millward, the chairman of the Yorkshire Enterprise Club, said: “Many entrepreneurs struggle to find a suitably flexible and affordable space to start their business.

“Rather than council buildings standing empty waiting for a buyer who might never come along, it would be a sensible idea to make an investment in the future success of the economy by giving start-up enterprises a step up to the first rung of the ladder.

“A peppercorn rent will at least prevent the buildings from falling into disrepair, and it would be a major boost to new entrepreneurs to have access at a realistic cost to space they need.”
