Outlook good as policies impact

Prospects for the rural property sector in Yorkshire at present are good. The first major issue affecting the rural property sector today is the planning system. National and local policies are having an impact on what may be possible in the future, meanwhile farmers and landowners are becoming aware of the potential opportunities being created as a consequence.

What is the best project you have been involved in?

I am currently involved in the management of a rural estate in West Yorkshire for a proactive landowner with a vision for building a viable business within a thriving community. It is a fascinating experience to be involved in pulling together a wide range of development prospects, including commercial, residential and rural property, into a cohesive plan for the future.

What is your favourite building in the region and why?

The Abbey Church at Ampleforth. It is an iconic building at the heart of an extraordinary community.

If you could change one thing in the property industry, what would it be?

In theory the proposed planning reforms will create a better balance between supply and demand. In practice, I think the best we can hope for is a more settled, consistent and properly resourced planning system, so we all know where we stand.

Who has inspired you?

I try to learn from all sorts of people, and various clients and colleagues have influenced my career. In terms of rural property management, I could not do much better than The Man Who Planted Trees. It is a lovely story of dedication to an ideal, and a desire to leave the world a better place.
