Painter brushes up for competition

A PAINTER and decorator from Bramley, in Leeds, has been selected to take part in an international skills competition.

Thomas Waudby, a 21-year-old employee of Shipley-based painting contractor Alfred Bagnall & Sons, will be a member of the UK team competing in WorldSkills 2011.

The competition allows the UK to assess training standards from around the world, with the aim of creating an internationally competitive domestic workforce.

Skills minister John Hayes said: "Vocational qualifications are essential to the Government's commitment to securing a highly skilled and capable workforce which is internationally competitive.

"The young people (selected] are living proof of the standards of excellence found in our vocational learning programmes and are fine examples of the talented, dedicated and committed apprentices we have in this country.

"This is why the Government has committed itself even further to workplace training with apprentices at its heart, and I wish every competitor the best of luck."
