The company, which currently employs 160 staff, has submitted plans to build a £4m extension to its office and warehouse in York, creating 25 new office jobs and 25 new warehouse jobs.

The application, which is due to go before the planning committee at York City Council next week, said the company’s storage requirements are expected to double over the next five years as it continues to grow.

The proposed 43,873 sq ft extension, to be built next year, would increase the footprint of the existing building by 112 per cent. Pavers also plans to create a 73-space car park.

The company currently has 125 shops in Britain and Ireland, opening 10-12 new stores year-on-year over the last three or four years, with a five per cent increase in online sales for the same period.

The company has the capacity to store 575,000 pairs of shoes, which is expected to rise to 800,000 pairs over the next five years.

At the moment it is using shipping containers and third party warehousing to house the rest of the shoes, which it says is inefficient and uneconomical.

The company originally applied to extend its headquarters in 2008. The proposed development, for a smaller extension of a similar layout, was granted but the extension never came to fruition.

Managing director Stuart Paver said the company was currently selling 3.5m pairs of shoes a year. “The extension would give us room to continue to grow,” he said.

“We are continuing to expand internationally and there are lots of exciting opportunities at the moment.”

The company, which has a turnover of about £82m, has overseas operations in India and Sri Lanka.

It is due to open stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi this month.

It also has a warehouse in China, which will be used for e-commerce by the end of the year.
