Pearsons' role in fusion project

DIGITAL communications firm Pearsons has beaten its European rivals to win a contract involving a major global energy project.

The company, which has offices in Leeds, Stockton on Tees and Newcastle, will develop a website and communication platform for Fusion for Energy, which is based in Barcelona, Spain. The site will be used by scientists, technical partners and will be an educational tool for the public. Pearsons will also create an intranet for the 400 multi-national staff working on the project.

Fusion for Energy, backed by the Council of the European Union, brings together countries and energy research firms to try to develop fusion as a global energy source. It involves releasing large amounts of energy using the power of the sun. Fusion could become the most significant form of energy generation of the future, according to Pearsons..

Lilian Hughes, managing director of Pearsons, said: "Winning such a prestigious contract is a real coup and is a golden opportunity for us to showcase our expertise in website design and digital innovation on a global scale.

"It is a particularly interesting project because the subject matter is so technical.

"Our challenge is to bring the project to life for the public, including particular target groups such as children, whilst also maintaining the interest of scientists, Government heads and financial investors."

The Pearsons team is led by Sue Cant, supported by Simon Hawkins and Neil Donald. The firm, which turns over 16m, expects to have the Fusion site and the intranet running by April.

Pearsons was set up in 1986 and has 57 staff.
