Polls show slip in support for EU and euro

Nearly two-thirds of Germans think their country would be better off without the euro and French support for the currency is slipping, two polls showed yesterday.

Some 65 per cent of Germans think they would be better off without the euro, according to a poll published by German newspaper Die Welt, reflecting growing unease at having to bankroll bailouts of troubled economies such as Greece.

Nearly half, 49 per cent, of Germans also believe Germany would be better off if it was not in the European Union, according to the poll by TNS Emnid.

In France, 36 per cent of people thought the country would do better if it was not in the euro- zone.
