Primark, HMV and Patisserie Valerie to close stores in Leeds and rest of UK

Primark, HMV and Patisserie Valerie will close their stores in Leeds and the rest of the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Major high street retailer Primark will close all 189 of its UK stores, affecting some 37,000 people.

A spokesman said: "Our main priority is the health and wellbeing of our employees.

"Primark has committed to supporting all employees who are directly affected by store closures, with full pay for their contracted hours for 14 days, after which the situation will be reviewed.

"Primark will continue to closely monitor the situation, following WHO advice as well as local and national government guidance."

Patisserie Valerie will close all its stores and online services from Monday, chief executive James Fleming said.

Mr Fleming said: "Following Government guidelines, it's with a heavy heart that as of tomorrow we will temporarily close all Patisserie Valerie stores and online services. The welfare of our guests and employees will always remain my highest priority," he said.

"Regrettably this has had an effect on our amazing team at Patisserie Valerie who have over the years shown incredible loyalty and resilience. We are here to support and guide them through what is a really challenging and difficult time. The teams are fully aware that what has happened today isn't the end of their time at Patisserie Valerie and we'll stay in touch to offer as much support as we can.

"This is unprecedented and never have I had to make such difficult decisions. I do however genuinely believe that with the support and loyalty of our wonderful teams and guests, Patisserie Valerie will come back stronger and better than ever."

HMV said it would be temporarily closing its stores for trade from the end of Sunday, although its online business would continue.

In an email, a spokesman said: "Thank you for all your continued loyalty and support during these uncertain times. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this unprecedented situation.

"We have kept our shops open as long as possible because we know how much entertainment can support people during difficult times.

"However, due to the unfolding situation with Coronavirus, we're very sad to have to let you know we'll be temporarily closing our stores for trade from the end of the day today, Sunday March 22nd."
