Restaurant groups find success on the menu in awards shortlist

SOME of the most recognisable names in Yorkshire's Asian business community have been shortlisted for the annual ABDN awards.

The entrepreneurs behind restaurants Mumtaz and Aagrah are among the nominations, which take place on April 1 in Leeds. The event started as an Asian business event but has expanded so it is open to all firms.

The firms shortlisted for best business include restaurant groups Aagrah, based in Shipley and Mumtaz Ventures, based in Leeds, as well as Sonic Megastore, based in Bradford.

Cooper's Coffee, run by Huddersfield former drinks salesman David Cooper, is also up for the SME of the year prize, and other categories include young entrepreneur of the year, best company to work for and most promising new business.

ABDN, which used to be known as the Asian Business Development Network, is putting on the evening at the Royal Armouries. Shazia Mirza, the controversial comedian, will also be performing at the event, which has a "breaking barriers" theme.

Arshad Chaudhry, chairman of the ABDN, said: "The annual dinner and business awards are a great networking opportunity and a truly inspirational night for business people across the region."

Last year's event attracted more than 650 guests, including representatives from Business Link, UK Trade & Industry and the Institute of Directors.
