From rock star to architect

DAMIAN Walsh did his A-levels at Batley Grammar School and worked at seminal record shop, Sundown, in London.

He went on to form a rock band, Gravel, that was signed by the guys behind Creation Records.

They released their debut EP, Statement of Intent, and went on to achieve two or three years of success and living the rock’n’roll lifestyle, touring and playing venues that other bands could only dream of.

Mr Walsh said: “At the time, my Dad in typical Yorkshire-style said nothing lasts forever and encouraged me to do some studying. I signed up for a building surveying degree at University of Central England.”

The band members joked that he would last six months as a student, but he completed the degree. Meanwhile, Gravel was faltering as dance was a more popular genre than rock during that time. So, he took his dad’s advice and joined the family architectural business, Martin Walsh Associates, in 2006.

The firm, based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, had been founded in 1976 and continued to thrive. Eventually, however, the two brothers took over as directors of the company, with nine employees, last September.

Damian has a more financial and business development led role and his brother Marcus is responsible for the architectural side of the business.

Mr Walsh said: “There are about 100 traits that translate from a rock band into business. You have to be passionate, driven and focused. In a way, being in a band teaches you a lot about networking.”

Recently he has begun a networking event in Leeds Called Suits and Vinyl.
