Rolls deal clear for take-off

ENGINEERING giant Rolls-Royce yesterday unveiled a long-term services deal with Emirates worth $2.2bn (£1.4bn).

The agreement under its TotalCare scheme will see Rolls’s technicians maintain the Trent engines of 70 Airbus planes which the airline is due to take delivery of in the next few years. It follows a $1.2bn (£700m) deal in November to service the Rolls engines on 48 Emirates planes. The deal brings the number of Emirates planes under its TotalCare contract to 128.

Civil aerospace division president Mark King said: “With this contract all of Emirates’ Rolls-Royce powered fleet are, or will be, supported by TotalCare packages that add significant value and allow customers to optimise their operations.”

The manufacturer faced a crisis in November when one of its Trent 900 engines exploded in mid-air, forcing a Qantas superjumbo into an emergency landing.

Rolls has a research hub at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Sheffield.
