Scottish Water to trial ITM equipment

CLEAN fuel firm ITM Power said today that Scottish Water had agreed to test its high-pressure hydrogen vehicle refueller.

The AIM-listed Sheffield firm said the water giant had signed a deal to participate in its Hydrogen On Site Trials (Host) programme, joining logistics firm DHL, London Stansted Airport and the Forestry Commission on the trials.

ITM said said Scottish Water will use the unit to power the Revolve Technologies on Ford Transit Vehicles

Graham Cooley, chief executive of ITM, said: "We are delighted that Scottish Water, a major UK water company, have joined the Host programme in order to appraise the potential of ITM's energy storage: clean fuel technology, for decarbonising return to base logistics fleet vehicles.

"We have been delighted with the support that HOST has attracted to date and we expect companies from other sectors to be joining the scheme in the near future."

Ian Summers, from Scottish Water's Procurement and Supply Chain said: "With five million customers the length and breadth of the country including some of the most remote and rural communities, it is vital that Scottish Water's fleet of 1,500 vehicles is as sustainable as possible going forward."

ITM is currently building its HFuel high-pressure refueller, thanks to support from the Technology Strategy Board and partners Gateway to London and Revolve Technologies. ITM's innovative electrolyser technology creates high-purity hydrogen from electricity and water. Trials will start next year, once HFuel has been built, and will provide each council with two Ford Transit vans run on hydrogen generated by portable refuellers.
