Second city centre site for Asda’s head office

SUPERMARKET giant Asda is expanding its headquarters by moving into an empty office building in Leeds.

The retailer has taken two floors totalling 38,000 sq ft of The Mint building in Holbeck Urban Village, which it plans to move into in the second half of the year, giving its head office two city centre locations.

Around 250 existing employees will be based in the new building, including one of the finance teams and the supermarket’s contact centre.

Asda opened its head office on Great Wilson Street in 1988 and today employs over 2,500 people in the city centre. It also operates a Merchandising Centre for Excellence in Morley, Leeds, where the business tests new ideas for its stores and trains colleagues from all over the country.

Chief executive Andy Clarke said: “We are proud to be a Leeds business – born and bred and this expansion of our space is further evidence of our commitment to the city.

“When Asda first moved into Holbeck in 1988, we were one of the only big businesses at this side of town. It has been fantastic to see how the area has flourished over the past 20 years and I hope our expansion in the area will demonstrate to other companies the great facilities on offer here.”

Asda says that the additional space at The Mint, which was built in 2008, will allow the business to continue to grow. Asda currently operates 386 stores across the UK, employing over 175,000 staff.
