Sharing the same goal with care centre deal

Work has begun on building a new £5m national centre of excellence for dementia care after a deal between one of Yorkshire’s oldest football clubs and a local property and healthcare group was given the go-ahead.

The collaboration between Harrogate Railway Football Club and Vida Healthcare, part of Harrogate-based The Rycroft Group, will see the creation of over 70 new jobs.

Leeds-based Projex Building Solutions and PDR Construction have been appointed project manager and building contractor for the scheme, which is due for completion in autumn 2012.

The jobs will all be based at Vida Hall, a new 71-bed specialist dementia centre which is being built on land previously forming part of the club’s eleven-acre ground at Starbeck in Harrogate.

James Rycroft, Vida’s managing director, said: “This is a unique approach to a development and a win-win situation for all parties. There is no reason why this type of agreement cannot be rolled out nationally in cases where clubs have excess land and are facing financial difficulties.”

At the same time, Harrogate Railway FC is to get a new club house, three five-a-side pitches and a junior football pitch. These new facilities will also enable the 70-year old club to generate new income streams in order to secure its long-term future.
