Shire takeover in Belgium

Drugmaker Shire plans to buy Belgium's Movetis for 428m euros (£355.3m) in cash to boost its portfolio of gastrointestinal products and drive growth via takeovers.

The acquisition would give Shire the rights to Resolor, which treats constipation, in 27 countries of the European Union and elsewhere.

Shire estimates potential annual peak sales of Resolor of more than 300m euros.

Buying Movetis would fit with Shire's long-standing strategy of building its business through acquisitions.

Institutional shareholders holding 38.9 per cent of the shares in Movetis have agreed to accept the 19-euro a share offer, Shire said yesterday.
