Sir Alex backs the apprentices

THOUGH famous for his role at the helm of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson started his career as a tool-making apprentice in Glasgow, writes Suzan Uzel.

And during a visit to Rotherham yesterday Sir Alex, pictured with young apprentices, gave a keynote speech on the importance of apprenticeships to mark the start of construction on the new Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre training centre building. “What we need is businesses to have confidence in young people,” said Sir Alex.

Due to be completed in the autumn, the AMRC Training Centre will provide hundreds of paid apprenticeships to students as young as 16 with the aim of “regenerating the region’s and the UK’s manufacturing industries”. The centre will primarily serve businesses with operations in the region, including Rolls-Royce. Picture: Chris Lawton
