SMEs are urged to show their overseas qualities

Innovative small firms across Yorkshire are being encouraged to show they’ve got what it takes to “export for growth” by entering a new competition run by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).

The initiative, backed by Prime Minister David Cameron and Trade Minister Lord Green, aims to encourage more small businesses to take their products and services to overseas markets by offering a package of support to the company with the best export idea.

The winner will receive a package of support from UKTI and partners HSBC Bank and PwC, including expert business knowledge and insight, access to a range of international resources and grants towards overseas travel.

SMEs have until Friday, January 13, to submit their entry. Shortlisted companies will then be invited to present their idea to a live audience of business leaders and a judging panel.

Mark Robson, UKTI international trade director for the region, said: “Businesses in this region have a long and proud history of international trading, which has resulted in record export figures in recent months. But while it’s right to shout about this success, the reality is that only a small number of SMEs export their products.

“If you’re a small company with a big export idea, we’re keen to hear from you, particularly if you’re new to exporting or relatively inexperienced. Just tell us – in 200 words – what your idea is, why it’s workable, and why now is the best time to take it to market.”

There will also be prizes for the second and third placed ideas, and all shortlisted companies will have access to professional mentoring support and time with an expert international trade adviser.

UKTI has also launched a search for the region’s ‘Most Innovative Mobile Company’ – businesses that can demonstrate a new product or service that has the potential to change the way people use mobiles across the world. The competition closes on December 14 and the winner will be announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012. A shortlist of finalists will pitch their product or service at the congress, with a package of support available. For further details on this contest, visit www.smartukproject.co.uk
