Spencer Group ready to build renewables plant

ONE of East Yorkshire’s biggest employers has pledged to push on with plans for the first renewable energy power plant of its kind in the UK, after the Government announced a package of support for green technologies.

The chief executive of the business behind the £100m-plus Energy Works development said the Government’s commitment to green energy projects would provide a welcome jobs and investment boost. Specialist engineering business Spencer Group plans to build Energy Works on the east bank of the River Hull. The energy recovery plant will use a combination of green and clean technologies to power 25,000 homes. Energy Works will also cut waste going to landfill by 90 per cent; increase recycling; create 200 jobs in the construction phase and 60 full-time jobs once operational.

It will also enable other businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey has published the results of a Government review of Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs), which determine subsidies for renewable technologies. The subsidies are in place to stimulate investment in green energy developments.
