What was your first job?

Shelf stacker at Safeway, although I think my title was ‘ambient replenisher’.

If you were not in your present job, what would you do?

Sports commentator.

What was your worst mistake?

Turning down the opportunity to go to America in my gap year at university.

What would be your ideal day away from the office?

Newby Hall with my wife and three daughters.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Any well-known food critic. They get treated like royalty whenever they walk into a restaurant and I’d get an insight into how their minds work.

What are your hobbies?

Gym, sports and taxiing children to various out-of-school clubs.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Secure all my family financially, support a few charities and buy a Nissan GTR and an executive box for life at Newcastle United.

What is your favourite time of day and why?

Evening, the scenery in the Dales when the sun is going down is amazing.

What is the best thing about being in business in Yorkshire?

The people – they are warm, welcoming and hospitable which is perfect for a five-star boutique hotel in the heart of Wensley-dale.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

I don’t want to tempt fate but something good to do with family and friends would be great.
