What was your first job?

A legal clerk at the Prudential in Holborn, issuing and serving writs.

If you weren’t in your present position, what would you be doing?

Still working for myself, on a farm somewhere. I made a business out of feeding pigs on school food swill but that was before I met girls!

What’s the worst mistake you’ve ever made?

Employing someone who punched above their weight, had a large expense account and brought no value to the business.

What’s your ideal day away from the office?

Watching cricket with friends on a warm sunny day at Scarborough Cricket Club.

Name one person you’d like to have dinner with and why?

Danny Boyle. The opening ceremony of last year’s London Olympic Games was inspirational.

What was your best subject at school?

English literature.

What are your hobbies?

Beekeeping and saloon car track days.

What would you do if you won the Lottery?

Retire and invest in several young small businesses.

‘Think positive’ because as two words it’s quick to say and the thought process recharges your brain.

What’s your favourite time of day?

Early morning.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A waxed coat for country pursuits.

What’s the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

Running a successful business in York for 30 years and bringing up a wonderful family, I’ve had the best time of my life.

What would your epitaph be?

His handshake was his word.
