On the Spot with Andrew Mear

What was your first job?

I've always worked for as long as I can remember and was independent from an early age. I have always loved the property business so after leaving university I went straight into the family property investment business.

What was your worst mistake?

I once outsourced a project to a contractor without screening their references and experience. The project ended up costing me 10 times as much as it should have done.

I would like to have dinner with Bill Gates. My father once rented a property to him before Microsoft became a household name. Charlize Theron or Nick Faldo would also be high on my list but the ultimate would be my grandfather who, sadly, I never had the privilege of meeting.

What was your best subject at school?

Design and sport.

What are your hobbies?

I like to keep busy so if I'm not working I like to play golf, squash, rugby – I also go to the gym as often as I can. I do have a passion for classic cars and antiques.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Enjoy a few treats with my wife and two children and make sure friends and family are looked after. I would also continue to contribute to the charities.

What is your top-time saving tip?

I'm very eco-friendly and always consider the environment so I would have to say internet banking. It is perfect for collecting rents and has reduced my journey time considerably.

What is your favourite time of the day?

First thing in the morning.

What is the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

The urban and rural landscape, mixed with the diverse cultures and communities.

What would your epitaph be?

That is for others to decide, but I would hope it would be something like: "Andrew loved life and all those around him."
