On The Spot With David Ettridge

David Ettridge, owner of Ettridge Architecture, based in Hull.

What was your first job?

I worked in my uncle’s bike shop – Ettridge Cycles. Selling and repairing bikes. I was about 13.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?

Ideally surfing in Australia, or an artist; but realistically probably something related to environmental or energy concerns.

What was your worst mistake?

Not getting round to surfing whilst studying in Australia. I will rectify this, though I may be 70 by the time I do so.

What is your ideal day away from the office?

A day out on my bike, cycling in the sun, with a café stop in one of the many beautiful Yorkshire villages.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why.

Michael Reynolds, the architect/inventor of Earthships – zero-carbon dwellings built from tyres and rammed earth.

What was your best subject at school?

Art and design.

What are your hobbies?

Cycling, running, martial arts and spending as much time as possible ‘adventuring’ with the kids.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Become a zero-carbon property developer.

What is your top time-saving tip?

If I have a deadline I turn off my e-mail. Those constant distractions in the bottom corner of the screen can ruin a day’s progress.

What’s your favourite time of the day?

I am more of an evening person, but am able to function in the mornings since the advent of children.

What is the best thing about Yorkshire?

The North Yorkshire Moors, especially around Rosedale Abbey. I truly believe that the drama of the scenery rivals absolutely anywhere.

What would your epitaph be?

“If you are reading this, then David Ettridge now knows THE answer…”
