On The Spot With Gavin Baldwin

Gavin Baldwin is chief executive of Doncaster Rovers. Rovers recently took over the lease of the Keepmoat Stadium in a 99-year deal.

What was your first job?

I was a receptionist at a doctors’ surgery in the school holidays.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?

Watching sport all over the world. I am desperate to go on a British Lions tour, watch England play football away and of course see Doncaster Rovers play at Wembley!

What was your worst mistake?

I played in a charity game of rugby union a week before I was due to play for England A, and I snapped all the ligaments in my knee. I missed the England A match and was out of action for 12 months.

What’s you ideal day away from the office?

Walking in the Peak District with my partner and our one-year-old daughter Maisie.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why.

Anyone better in business than me – I am fiercely competitive and want to learn all the tricks of the trade.

What was your best subject at school?

Maths.

What are your hobbies?

I try and go to the gym no fewer than three times a week. I am planning to do the Scotland Coast to Coast Rat Race, a run, bike ride and kayak over 100 miles, this month.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Put the winnings into Maisie’s account, to protect her for the future.

What’s your favourite time of day?

5am, when I am driving across the hills on my way to work. It gives me peace and the chance to do some strategic thinking.

What’s the best thing about Yorkshire?

The people. They are straight-forward, down to earth and appreciate hard work.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

‘Start with the end in mind’.
