An attempted acquisition of a company in Australia from which I learnt many things about myself and business.

What would be your ideal day away from the office?

Kayaking on a calm day in the Outer Hebrides.

Name one person you would most like to have dinner with?

Bill Gates. He attended a dinner function I was at in Australia and was fascinating. He has recently donated £800m to charity and I admire that he balances what he earns by giving something back to worthwhile causes.

What was your best subject at school?

Geography, I’m very fond of travelling.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

There’s a particular bar on the beach in the Philippines that I would like to buy. I would give half to my children, and donate the rest to a charity for the elderly.

What is your top time-saving tip?

If it doesn’t add value then don’t do it.

What is your favourite time of day and why?

Summer mornings – the peace and quiet, the changing light and the dawn chorus are magnificent.

An old pair of blue shorts and a t-shirt with a butterfly on it.

What’s the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

As the largest food producing county in the UK, Yorkshire’s breadth and depth of food is mouth-watering – literally. The people are stimulating and I am working with a vibrant team.
