On The Spot With Linda Crossland-Clarke

Linda Crossland-Clarke is managing director of Hull-based SHE Knows Health & Safety, an independent training provider.

What was your first job?

Management trainee at Boots the chemist.

If you weren’t in your current position. What would you be doing?

A radio DJ in the Falklands Islands, which was the last work I did before retraining in health and safety. It’s a beautiful place and very British. The Falklanders adamantly defend their right to self-determination.

What was your worst mistake?

The one I didn’t learn from!

What’s your ideal day away from the office?

Camping somewhere in Yorkshire with friends around a campfire, taking time out to keep the work life balance and relaxing, a few beers and games.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why.

Jeremy Clarkson because he is set up to be so anti-safety. On Top Gear, he loves to have a dig at the safety professionals, though we try to prove we are not all dinosaurs with clipboards: we just want to send people home in the same state they came to work in at the start of the day.

What was your best subject at school?

Biology

What are your hobbies?

Motorbikes – though I have a Yamaha trike at the moment. I still get the buzz from being on the open road, and can take my son and camping gear with me.

What would you like to do if you won the Lotto?

Company team building week somewhere warm and mend my roof at home in Goole.

What’s your favourite time of day?

Last thing at night, when the sky is clear and all is quiet.

What’s the best thing about Yorkshire?

Green fields and narrow, single-track roads.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

I ignored them when they said ‘No’.
