What was your first job?

Working in the loading bay at John Lewis – my finest moment was getting a washing machine into a mini.

Somewhere in my head I can still see myself as a fireman.

Taking an untaxed car through security at Devonport Royal Dockyard. I hadn’t realised the tax disc had been stolen but I still ended up with a conviction for tax evasion.

Describe your ideal day away from the office.

Cheating on the dog walk in the morning by using my mountain bike, an afternoon pottering around the house and then dinner with my wife to give us both the chance to dress up.

Name the one person you would most like to have dinner with?

Lance Armstrong. I would like to try and get some insight into what motivates someone to push himself to win seven Tour de France and then attempt a comeback from retirement.

What was your best subject at school?

Maths.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would have to buy a ticket first.

What’s your top time-saving tip?

Realise that not everyone who tells you their problems is looking for you to step in and try and sort them out.

What is your favourite time of day and why?

Sitting down to dinner as a family in the evening.

What is the best thing about Yorkshire?

The huge variety of landscape, and especially the fact that I can live 25 minutes from the office but still be miles from any mobile signal.

What would be your epitaph?

Something witty and unpretentious. I am hoping that I still have a while to work it out.
