On the Spot with Paul Denman

What was your first job?

I was an apprentice maintenance technician with BP straight from school

If you were not in your present job, what would you do?

I'd travel, a lot – taking in plenty of sport along the way

What would be your ideal day away from the office?

Today's been a pretty ideal day off: morning in the garden with the family, followed by going out for a coffee with my wife; golf with friends in the afternoon and a meal out in the evening.

Richard Branson. He mixes business with a real spirit of adventure.

Technical drawing. I suppose I always had that attention to detail and had a chance to stick with it when I first went to BP. Thankfully, I opted against it.

What are your hobbies?

I've done all sorts from diving, parachuting and flying to golf, cricket and gardening. At the moment, I'd say big gardening projects and golf.

What is your favourite garment?

I enjoy smartening up and wearing a decent suit

Which political, legal or economic event would you most like to see happen in your lifetime, and why?

Proportional representation; one man one vote.

What would you do if you won the National Lotto?

I'd still keep the business going but would look to property development. I'd also love to have the time to build my own home from scratch.

What is your top time-saving tip?

Don't jump into anything. Take a step back, think and be sure of your decision. It helps.

What would your epitaph be?

I'd rather let somebody else choose my epitaph but I have always tried to make a good impression.

Paul Denman, managing director of Denman Instrumentation, based in Hessle, near Hull, which provides managers, engineers and technicians to the power and petrochemical industry.
