What was your first job?

My first job was as a labourer digging up roads in Newcastle.

I'd probably be a frustrated pilot after the recent ash cloud issue.

What was your worst mistake?

I've learned through experience to trust people until they give you reason not to. In the vast majority of cases, it is the best and most rewarding way to behave.

What's your ideal day away from the office?

Going for a long run in the Dales, then out for dinner with family and/or friends in the evening.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why.

This would have to be my childhood hero, Willie John McBride, captain of the first British Lions rugby team to win in South Africa.

What was your best subject at school?

Physics and rugby.

What are your hobbies?

I'm basically an outdoor person and in my free time I enjoy sailing, running and golfing. Also, when I get a chance, I love reading a good book, although this tends to happen mainly on holidays.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would change the hours I work so I have more free time... and buy an ocean-going boat.

What's your top time-saving tip?

Don't do other people's jobs as well as your own.

What's your favourite item of clothing?

Definitely my running shoes.

What's your favourite time of day?

In the summer, I love to get up early, around 5.30am, and see all the wildlife around the area I live in the Dales.

What's the best thing about Yorkshire?

It's not London. I love the pace of life and the fantastic countryside.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

Family man, good friend, gave everything his best shot.
