On the Spot with Steve Taylor

What was your first job?

I was a trainee buyer at Rothervale Joinery in Woodhouse Mill, Sheffield.

If you weren't in your current position, what would you be doing?

I would probably be a teacher. I'm chair of governors at a primary school in Chesterfield and enjoy the highs and lows in the education of young children.

What was your worst mistake?

Going to work with a certain employer and the way that employment ended.

What's your ideal day way from the office?

A walk in the country with my family interrupted only by lunch in a country pub.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Warren Buffet, the greatest investor of our time because I would like to know how he remains so grounded being one of the richest men in the world. He likes burgers and coke and gives enormous amount of his wealth to charity.

What was your best subject at school?

Maths, but I enjoyed history most.

What are your hobbies?

I am a devoted football fan and spend much of my spare time, watching Sheffield Wednesday with my family or watching my eldest son play football.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Look after my family and friends, buy a house overlooking the countryside and a nice car, invest money in Taylor Oliver and give the rest to my wife.

What's your favourite item of clothing?

Clothes have never interested me. Tracksuit/jogging bottoms are what I feel most comfortable in – the rest is just for show.

What's your favourite time of day?

First thing in the morning. I am an early starter and it's great to be up and about when most people are still in bed.

What's the best thing about Yorkshire?

Yorkshire people. This is not necessarily everybody who was born or lives in Yorkshire, I mean proper down-to-earth Yorkshire people who carry the traits that make us famous.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

He did his best – now do yours.
