Strainsonics’ device helps group to Make it in Great Britain

A YORKSHIRE-based firm which could save lives in earthquake zones has won a place at an exhibition that celebrates the most innovative companies in Bri- tain.

Rotherham-based Strainsonics has created LoadSCAN, an ultrasonic load monitoring technology which can be used by civil and structural engineers. The inventors believe that LoadSCAN could warn operators when a structure has become overloaded.

It could save lives after earthquakes and hurricanes, by assessing whether buildings and bridges can still be used. Strainsonics, which has three staff, got to the final after impressing an expert panel.

The LoadSCAN will be displayed at the Make it in Great Britain exhibition, which is being held at the Science Museum in London between July 24 and September 9.

Alongside LoadSCAN, other successful entries in the Make it in Great Britain Challenge include a new technology which could offer relief to tinnitus sufferers, an eco-friendly alternative to cement and a pushchair that can be folded into a rucksack.

Business Minister Mark Prisk said yesterday: “The UK is full of creative manufacturing expertise, and I’m delighted that we are able to celebrate some of the best pre-market ideas through the challenge.”

Mr Prisk said innovative talent was spread across Britain, and he was encouraged by the wide variety of ideas in the entries.

Each Make it in Great Britain Challenge finalist will be on display for one week of the exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to vote for their favourite entry.
