Summit to focus on building energy efficiency

THE future of energy in buildings will be debated by professionals and academics at a Yorkshire conference today as part of an initiative to develop more sustainable ways of tackling the issue.

Green Vision, which is to be hosted at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Centre for Knowledge Exchange at Broadcasting House, will feature speakers and round table events as well as debate on social media platforms.

Among the speakers is Armin Meyer, programme manager for the Institute of Building Efficiency, who will discuss the recent results of the 2011 Energy Efficiency Indicator, which looked at energy efficiency trends and practices among 4,000 building executives in North America, Europe, India, China, Australia, Brazil and South Africa.

The report found that while a need for costs savings remains the main reason for pursuing energy efficiency in buildings, the ranking of other drivers has chang- ed.

Greenhouse gas reduction fell from second to fourth place, government incentives moved to the number two spot, enhancing brand image took third place and energy security made its first appearance in the list of top motivators.

Discussions will be streamed live across the Green Vision web platforms, with live tweet and blogging, expanding the event beyond a 50-70 delegate group.

The event is supported by regional partners including property developers Citu, The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, RICS, legal experts Squire Sanders Hammonds, social media consultancy Fairsnape and Leeds College of Building. It has also received support from the UK Green Building Council.

The virtual networking event is supported by Be2camp, which specialises in social media for the built environment.

Claire Walker, project manager at Green Vision, said: “At a time when the Carbon Deal is being discussed daily in Parliament, in particular surrounding Display Energy Certificates, Green Vision will provide the stage for hugely topical debate.”

She added: “The digital element of the event helps make it a more cost effective, low carbon and ultimately more sustainable way to network and interact with like-minded individuals.”

Karen Stafeckis, development manager at Citu, added: “Understanding and addressing the ways in which our buildings use energy is fundamental in achieving the wider aim of reducing carbon emissions from the built environment.”

The event is being held between 1.30pm and 5.30pm today. For more information visit http://www.green-vision.org.uk/
