Sustainable design earns supermarket its green credentials

A NEW Morrisons store has been recognised for its green credentials after receiving a BREEAM Excellent rating for its sustainable design.

The store in Illingworth, Halifax was designed by Bowman Riley Architects and the engineering consultancy AECOM in Leeds acted as BREEAM assessor.

Features include CO2 sensors on the sales floor, lighting and temperature controls and low carbon technologies,

Stephen Haestier, project architect, said: "One of the most innovative aspects of the design was the use of an energy panel solar air heating cladding system on the south faade. It works by pre heating the air before it is brought into the building, reducing the CO2 used in running the store by up to eight tonnes a year."
