Things bubbling nicely for water heater firm

THE Yorkshire-based firm that makes water heaters and hand dryers for attractions such as Fountains Abbey and Elland Road plans to create jobs as it moves to new premises.

Hyco Manufacturing is moving to a 26,000 sq ft site at Normandy Court, on Wakefield Europort.

The new base is double the size of its current premises, which are also on Wakefield Europort. Building work has started on the site and is due for completion by May next year.

The move will enable the company to expand its research and development facilities and increase the size of its stock-holding facilities. The company will also introduce a dedicated assembly line.

The firm's sales increased by 20 per cent to 3.2m in 2009/10 as it increased its market share. The expansion will also see Hyco increase the size of its workforce by 50 per cent over the next two to three years, from 15 to around 23.

Hyco has been owned by the husband and wife team of Mike and Kirsty McHugh for 15 years.

The couple believe that Yorkshire's manufacturers can outperform their low-cost rivals by focusing on innovation.

Managing director Mr McHugh said: "Our current premises have served us well but we now need a bigger and more flexible site. With 26,000 sq ft, we'll be able to do so much more and meet the demands of our growing list of customers.

"It is also exciting that the move means we will be creating new jobs at a time when unemployment is escalating."

Hyco's product range includes electric water heating and space heating equipment, as well as hand dryers which are sold to wholesalers and distributors. Apart from Fountains Abbey and Leeds United's football ground at Elland Road, Hyco's products can also be found in schools, hospitals, restaurants and offices.

Mr McHugh heads the operational side of the business, including product development, logistics and supplier management, while Mrs McHugh is responsible for sales, marketing and finance.
