Time to shake up the rules prohibiting charity trading

What’s the biggest development you’ve seen in the legal world during your career?

It would have to be the Charities Acts 2006 and 2011 and the growth in popularity of corporate legal vehicles.

The nature of charities is changing now more than ever, as well as their legal needs in light of the type of work that they carry out.

What law would you like to see changed?

I would like to see the current rules against charity trading revised because I think it is a bit of a nonsense for charities to be prohibited from doing something themselves, while being able to set up another legal vehicle to do it for them.

Having said that, a separate legal vehicle might be desirable from a risk point of view so perhaps the law just needs to be more flexible in this respect.

What is the most exciting work you’ve ever done?

I’m lucky in that all of the work I do is quite exciting, but what makes it all the more so is when you work with trustees and senior management who are very passionate about their cause.

Who in the legal world do you most admire?

It sounds corny, but there are too many people to mention. So, instead, I will nominate my mother, who is hard working, totally selfless and has always encouraged and supported me in everything I’ve done.

And, as it is the year of the Diamond jubilee, I suppose I ought to say that I admire the Queen for her service to the country for the last 60 plus years.

Again, she is another example of a hard working mother who has come through a variety of trials and tribulations, someone who demonstrates a great strength in character and who acts with dignity and integrity.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the profession?

Work hard and you can achieve anything. Put the needs of your clients first and aim to always deliver a first class service.
