The leading property lawyer will continue to work with the firm in an advisory capacity. He served on the international board between 2006 and 2009.

Mr McLean said: "I have been proud to build my career at DLA Piper. Our practice in Leeds has had 10 years of successful development and growth on the local regional, national and international scene and I know Sarah will lead the office to even greater success."

He started his career as a trainee at Atkinsons & Sons and later worked at city rival Walker Morris before joining DLA Piper in 1993.

He worked on some landmark property deals in Yorkshire, including the redevelopment of Headingley cricket ground and the 250m regeneration of Doncaster's shopping centre. He also led the sale of Dawnay Dale's 635m property portfolio.
