Training boost for next generation of surgeons

University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle now have state-of-the-art operating theatre simulators developed by Brandon Medical.

The 6m turnover firm, based in Middleton, Leeds, creates simulators that are entire rooms, replicating the conditions and equipment of real hospitals.

"Students and medical professional have found the system significantly improved the quality of teaching and the simulation theatres provide students with an environment helping to master the skills they will require in real life theatres," said Brandon operations director Adrian Hall.

Brandon's interactive "Symposia" audio visual system comes with a wide range of components. In the Newcastle installation, it connects four clinical training tables with a seminar room, video conferencing facilities and external participants in high definition.

The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre was created as part of a 300m investment by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

At University Hospitals Coventry and Warwick (UHCW) the Brandon system supplies eight simulated operating theatres, camera systems, monitors and theatre lights that replicate real medical environments.

Professor Damian Griffin, from UHCW, said: "Modern audio-visual technology has the potential to revolutionise medical teaching.

"Here, the eight simulated theatres provide an interactive experience to train junior surgeons and introduce experts to new techniques."
