At around 6pm on Tuesday, the truck was travelling on Bower Road when it attempted to drive underneath the railway bridge.

Only one lane of traffic remained open while the vehicle was recovered, and trains between Leeds and Knaresborough were hit, with services terminating at Harrogate.

Police said later that a recovery team had managed to free the lorry from under the bridge and was in the process of making the road safe before clearing up.
